Autism Action respond to false and harmful President Trump announcement about autism

Tom Purser, CEO of Autism Action, said:

“This is a profoundly grave and serious moment for autistic people and autism science. The Trump administration’s announcement has thrown the doors open for the worst kind of conspiracy theorists and anti-vaccination disinformation peddlers. Many autistic people, parents, and their supporters will be waking up today scared and worried about what this means.

“To be clear – research has established that there is no link between vaccines and autism. No research has found a causal link between paracetamol use or folic acid and autism. The Trump administration presented no research or evidence, just dangerous and ideologically driven speculation.

“It’s time for our own Government, and others around the world, to step up and take proper leadership. Autism research must be focused on the things that actually improve the wellbeing and happiness of autistic people.

“The Trump administration is reversing progress, creating fear, and misdirecting resources. It will not make autistic people, or their supporters, healthier, happier, or better cared for.

“We need action on the societal failings that lead to early and preventable deaths. We need action to give autistic children the right to a decent education and adults to employment. We need action on exclusion and deep inequality. And most importantly, we must stand together in hope and solidarity, against the fear being pushed by the White House.”
